Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial

For Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation

In 2008, the Hind Foundation granted $23,000 to Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation to complete the final piece of the Faces of Freedom Veterans memorial in time for its dedication on Veterans Day 2008. The grant funded the final task of engraving of the names of local heroes who gave their lives for our freedom in a granite slab. The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation worked for over two years to build a memorial to recognize the 23,000 local service members. The memorial also has flags representing the various branches of the military and an 8-foot sculpture by Atascadero artist Mark Greenway depicting local soldiers from World War I to the War on Terror.

Noteworthy Outcomes
•    Honoring Our Veterans
The Faces of Freedom Memorial is recognized on the Purple Heart Trail that was created as a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments across the country that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal.

•    Educating Youth
The Foundation believes the Memorial is about our future, as it will be used to teach our youth about our nation’s core values and will serve as a symbol of our gratitude to those, who through their service and by their sacrifice, put their country first.

•    Community Unification
Reminiscent of a barn raising, the effort to bring the vision of the memorial to a reality required the efforts of many and became a source of pride for all.

“A thank you letter doesn’t come close to being able to express our gratitude for your very generous donation that literally put the Veteran Memorial project “over the top”. You stepped up to help the Foundation when we needed it most to insure that the “Faces of Freedom’ Veterans memorial would be built by Veterans day 2008. You have helped make a dream become reality for our Veterans.”
