In 2007, the Hind Foundation granted $100,000 to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa for seismic retrofitting and renovations, which were required by the City of San Luis Obispo to be completed by year 2010. With a final cost of $2.7 million, the project was completed and the Mission rededicated in February 2009, many months ahead of schedule. Founded on September 1, 1772 by Junipero Serra, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, was the fifth of 21 missions established by Franciscans in California; it now represents one of the largest parishes in the Diocese of Monterey.
Noteworthy Outcomes
• Safe and Sound
The reinforced California Historical Landmark – now structurally safe and sound for its parishioners and the general public – will be able to better withstand any future seismic events and live on in perpetuity for future generations to enjoy.
“Again, I extend by deepest appreciation for your continuing support of the Old Mission, San Luis Obispo.”
~ Rev. Russell Brown, Pastor
