In 2008, the Hind Foundation granted $150,000 to American Land Conservancy (ALC) for the acquisition of Wild Cherry Canyon (formerly Avila Ranch), 2,400 acres of undeveloped coastal landscape in the southeastern portion of the “Irish Hills” in San Luis Obispo County. ALC is working to protect and transfer the property to the state for inclusion in the California State Park system. Together with other adjacent properties, the conservation of Wild Cherry Canyon will expand Montaña de Oro State Park by 65% (5,500 acres), making it one of the largest parks in the State. This project will also enable a 15-20 mile extension of the California Coastal Trail in ALC's West Coast Trail program.
