Lobero Theatre Restoration

For Lobero Theatre Foundation

In 2012, the Hind Foundation granted $100,000 to Lobero Theatre Foundation to fund the restoration of this iconic facility. Originally founded in 1873 and rebuilt in 1924, it is recognized as one of Santa Barbara’s architectural jewels and a State and City landmark. The Hind Foundation’s grant supported the construction cost of the restoration, implementing wider seats with increased legroom, improved acoustics and lighting, expanded restroom facilities, and significantly improved airflow in the building. Compliance with new ADA regulations also improved safety in the auditorium, at the side exits, and in the area in front of the building.

Project Successes

• Preserved & Enhanced History
California’s oldest continuously operating live performance venue, Lobero Theatre  is a dynamic venue that is “live” 200 nights of the year! The restoration project keeps the facility’s beauty and function intact for generations to come.

• Increased Earning Capabilities
The planned renovations made the theatre more usable, particularly in the slower summer months, and increased its earning capabilities.

• Meeting Community Needs
The Lobero Theatre is home to numerous local performing arts organizations. This restoration project keeps Lobero accessible to all local performing arts, especially those young artists who will shape the future of music, dance and theatre.
